This isn’t a blog post I’d ever planned to share, but if I’ve learned anything in the past few weeks it’s that you have to be flexible and adapt to whatever life throws at you.⁠

There’s not exactly a “how to plan a wedding during a pandemic” section in the wedding etiquette books ??‍ But if your wedding is being canceled or postponed due to COVID-19, it’s important to let your guests know as soon as possible.

If you’re scrambling to figure out a Plan B, I’ve put together some sample wording for wedding insert cards and postponement announcements you can use to keep your guests informed. I’d also recommend creating a wedding website (if you haven’t already) so you have a place to direct your guests for more information. As much as I love sending paper announcements, on online space to share details is easy to update (which is crucial now, since things are changing so fast!)⁠

⁠Many April and May brides are choosing to reschedule their wedding for the fall or next spring. If you’re postponing or rescheduling your wedding and you’ve already sent out invitations, you might consider sending a “Change the Date” card.⁠ Similar to a save the date card, this announcement lets your family and friends know that although plans have changed, you’re still getting married.

Still getting married, but want to celebrate with your guests in an appropriately “socially distant” way? Invite them to celebrate with you virtually! Live stream your exchange of vows, host a video conference call, or facetime your loved ones. Just because you can’t physically be together doesn’t mean you can’t have a zoom dance party!

If you’re getting married later this year and going ahead with everything as planned, you might consider including a “just in case things change” insert in your wedding invitation suite.⁠

You might also want to send your wedding invitations as late as you can, and push your RSVP date a little closer to your wedding. The longer you can wait, the better the chance that things will be back to normal, and your guests will feel more confident making travel plans to celebrate with you.
